The World as Will and Representation argues that a blind, irrational will drives all existence. One of the first Western philosophers to engage seriously with Eastern thought. His pessimism influenced Wagner, Nietzsche, and Freud. Despised Hegel and scheduled his lectures at the same time to compete, but his classroom was empty.
