The greatest Buddhist philosopher after the founder himself. Established the Madhyamaka or middle way school. Demonstrated that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. His tetralemma dismantles claims of existence, nonexistence, both, and neither. The Mulamadhyamakakarika is still studied and debated 1,800 years on. His emptiness doctrine shaped every later Mahayana tradition.
