Founded Mohism, the great rival of early Confucianism. Taught jian ai, impartial care for all people equally. Blamed war on partiality toward family and state. Opposed offensive warfare, lavish rituals, and extravagant music. His followers formed disciplined corps of engineers famous for defending besieged cities. Developed early Chinese logic and standards of measurement.
