On Liberty is the foundational text of liberal democracy. Educated by his father from age 3, reading Greek at 3 and Latin at 8. Had a mental breakdown at 20 from the pressure of his upbringing. Utilitarianism: actions are right insofar as they promote happiness. His harm principle limits state power over individuals.
