About Mencius

The Second Sage of Confucianism. Argued human nature is good, like water that flows downhill. Virtue grows from four sprouts present in everyone. Told kings the people rank highest and the ruler lowest. Held that deposing a tyrant is punishment, not treason. His reading of Confucius became state orthodoxy for centuries.
