Placed ethics before ontology as first philosophy. The face of the other makes an infinite demand: do not kill. Totality and Infinity accused Western thought of reducing the other to the same. His family perished in the Holocaust in Lithuania. Studied under Husserl and Heidegger, then broke with the latter. Otherwise than Being pushed language itself to its limit.
