About Hobbes
Leviathan argued that without government, life would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Wrote during the English Civil War, which shaped his view of human nature. The social contract: people surrender freedom to a sovereign in exchange for security. He and Descartes disliked each others philosophy. Lived to 91, remarkably old for his era.
